Shilajit (mumio) is a natural biological substance from the Himalayas. It appears in dry and sheltered places on rocks composed mainly of limestone granite. It contains inorganic and organic compounds (hydrocarbon transformation products, petroleum products) as well as plant remains (including mulberry and juniper), algae, and lichens, which, when they get into the crevices of rocks, create dead organic matter. It takes the form of lumps or crystals with the consistency of tar or resin.
