The most important property of lutein is its antioxidant action; it neutralizes free radicals that are formed in the eyeball under the influence of sunlight and the oxidative damage they initiate. Most lutein accumulates in the macula, the structure of the eye responsible for color vision and visual acuity. Lutein (along with zeaxanthin) is found in the retina and lens of the eye, so it is helpful in the prevention of cataracts and macular degeneration, a disease leading to vision deterioration and sometimes complete vision loss.
