Berberine is a naturally occurring compound belonging to the group of isoquinoline alkaloids. It is obtained from various parts of plants, from roots and shrubs to leaves and fruits. Once isolated, it has a characteristic yellow color and a very bitter taste. It has been used in Chinese medicine to treat various ailments for thousands of years and is very popular there due to its effective effects.
